Attempted traffic stop leads to pursuit and stolen motorcycle

On May 20, 2020, just before midnight, Deputy Thomas Mellencamp was on routine patrol on highway East US Highway 50 near State Road 3 when he attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a motorcycle for a traffic infraction. The motorcycle accelerated at a high rate of speed and began to flee from Deputy Mellencamp while continuing to travel east on US Highway 50.  After pursuing the motorcycle for a short time and reaching speeds exceeding 110 mph, Deputy Mellencamp terminated the pursuit for the safety of the rider on the motorcycle.  Deputies lost sight of the motorcycle going into Butlerville.

Deputies stayed in the area to observe for the motorcycle when they located a male subject, identified as David E. Turner (40 Butlerville) walking through a yard.  Sgt. Cody Low located a motorcycle parked in a driveway on Washington Street near the area they observed Turner walking.  The bike was still warm to the touch and was later determined to have been stolen from Indianapolis.  After further investigation, the key for the motorcycle was located in Turner's pocket.   Mr. Turner was taken into custody and transported to the Jennings County Jail on the following charges:
